Altrettanto importante è la diffusione di quei carburanti che, nonostante siano anch'essi di origine fossile, presentano indubbi vantaggi ambientali rispetto alla benzina e al gasolio: metano e GPL, la cui diffusione nel sistema dei trasporti risulta ancora modesta, sebbene in crescita negli ultimi anni."

Si deve puntare ad “armonizzare la convivenza tra i diversi sistemi di spostamento migliorando l’offerta di infrastrutture, mezzi e servizi: autobus confortevoli e rapidi, sedi protette per le biciclette, marciapiedi comodi e arredi urbani per stimolare la camminata, strade ben mantenute per ridurre il rischio di incidenti, chiare e diffuse segnaletiche orizzontali e verticali per favorire la guida dei veicoli privati”. E per questo “è indispensabile rivedere profondamente la strategia della convivenza tra i diversi sistemi di mobilità nelle città, con un’azione su tre fronti principali”:
1. La redistribuzione dello spazio urbano per assicurare maggiori opportunità di scelta in particolare alle soluzioni di mobilità non motorizzata, attraverso la diffusione delle misure di mitigazione della velocità, l’estensione degli spazi dedicati a pedoni e ciclisti (verde urbano, isole pedonali, piste ciclabili), la promozione di zone della città a basso impatto veicolare (quartieri car free, come nell’esperienza tedesca, olandese e inglese):
2. Il rafforzamento, nel numero e nel profilo, delle regole che disciplinano la guida dei veicoli privati e delle relative sanzioni;
3. Il rafforzamento dei sistemi di vigilanza e controllo (law enforcement) per assicurare la repressione delle infrazioni alla legge.
La ricerca di un nuovo equilibrio produrrebbe una riarticolazione degli spazi urbani e dell’organizzazione del trasporto ad evidente beneficio della mobilità ecologica e di quella collettiva, senza ledere i diritti del trasporto individuale. A suggello di una politica urbana così orientata si può infine immaginare di promuovere uno statuto dei diritti e dei doveri di chi si muove in città (non solo i diritti degli utenti del trasporto pubblico, come proposto nel Libro verde europeo sul trasporto urbano), con l’obiettivo di dare trasparenza e legittimazione ad una fase nuova di definizione delle responsabilità (doveri), accanto alle libertà e ai diritti, in particolare per quanti oggi, in assenza di una cultura rigorosa della disciplina stradale, esercitano la prerogativa di circolare con il proprio veicolo da una posizione di forza, senza dover riconoscere il principio di “pari opportunità” a chi sceglie una diversa soluzione di trasporto.
Per diventare realtà, la motorizzazione a idrogeno (per non parlare dell'economia, a idrogeno) deve superare una quantità rilevante di ostacoli scientifici e tecnologici. Difatti, nonostante tutti gli annunci, è arcinoto che le case automobilistiche vedono il futuro nelle auto ibride e, poco più in là, in quelle puramente elettriche. «L'idrogeno potrebbe avere un impatto significativo dal 2050 in poi», dice John Heywood, direttore del laboratorio automotive all'MIT. E l'accento è su quel«potrebbe».
Solo il 5% dell'idrogeno commercialmente disponibile viene dall'acqua, perché richiede troppa energia. Solitamente, viene ricavato dal metano e quindi addio ai benefici ambientali. La Gm ha trovato il modo di comprimere l'idrogeno, ma ci vuole un serbatoio molto grande e robusto. Non bisogna dimenticare che l'idrogeno è l'atomo più piccolo e che, per sua natura, scapperebbe da tutte le parti. Inoltre l'idrogeno può esplodere.
A questo scenario, aggiungiamo pure le difficoltà connesse al trasporto e alla distribuzione, e si capisce che gli ostacoli sono al momento insormontabili: nel mondo, ci sono oggi circa mille chilometri di condutture che trasportano idrogeno, ma costano un milione di dollari al chilometro.
È certamente lecito attendersi una messe di invenzioni e di scoperte che ci avvicineranno sempre di più verso un'economia, e una motorizzazione, all'idrogeno. L'umanità ha anche altre opzioni nel suo cammino verso un'economia a bassa intensità di anidride carbonica. L'idrogeno potrebbe anche trovare un posto, nel nostro futuro.
